Car year vs. VIN

Thanks to Louis (car 1121) for the research on this page on the puzzles that have appeared regarding some of the Replicars model year designations. (1976 through 1981) This theory may ALSO apply to earlier Glassic production and labeling of years.

  • Several times it has come up that a car is one model year, the VIN sticker says a different year. For example, my car is a 1977 yet my VIN sticker says May 14, 1978. (The 1977 models had front leaf springs, the 1978’s had coil springs in the front)
  •

  • Also on the Annex website there is a form that shows VIN 1290 as a 1978, but the bill of sale is dated 1/26/79.
  • Then there is car 1033, a 1976 Phaeton, bought new by Peyton, that has a bill of sale dated May 16, 1977.
  • Car 1472 owned by Bob in St. Charles, MO, says his car is a 1980 yet the VIN sticker says 1/23/81.
  • I think it is safe to assume that many of the Replicars were sold and THEN it took 5 to 6 months to get them built.
  • From the Annexmaster:

While most car characteristics and VIN numbers agree and can identify the car's year, obviously, there are some exceptions.

Over the years, a number of titles have changed - some Glassics are titled as 1931 Fords, for example, and often VIN numbers will change, due to a lost VIN sticker, or state requirements that can't handle a three of four digit VIN number. The best way of identifying your car is by the physical characteristics of the car.
