Car 689 - operation Bling!
In August, 2011, your Annexmaster finally got around to taking
a look at Bud 6
the unrestored 1973 Phaeton that I had bought when coming to California.
I decided that I would get the car roadworthy, but when
replacing parts
I would upgrade to chrome or bling when possible. This page will
record my efforts, and, when they worked, part numbers.
I took the car to Classic Mustang, on Auto Park Way, in
Escondido, CA -- they specialize in early Mustangs, and were willing to
look at the car since the running gear was familiar. They inspected
the car without charge, but hoped for some work to come from the visit. Their report showed $321 in parts and $1260 in labor if I did EVERYTHING on their list. Highlights included a bunch of leaks around the transmission, bad points, replace water pump, and other misc. items. They also had a few items regarding "wiring exposed". |

The parts below were ordered on-line and all
indicated within a day or two that they had been shipped. Water pump. I wanted a chrome, high output pump since we were doing it (it had been rattling lately). The Classic Mustang people had a good price on a plain water pump, but did not seem to want to spend a lot of time looking for special products, so they said I could find parts. The main feature that I found was that in the late /60's Ford 302 water pumps there are ones with the input on the passenger side and others with the input on the driver's side. I needed passenger side and found a chrome water pump at Summit Racing. I also got a chrome pulley for the water pump from Summit. Ordered 7/29 Friday, received on Monday. Wow. Fit not verified yet. Summit Racing Part Number Part Description -- and there was a fee of about $12 or so for shipping etc.) Radiator - my report card from Classic Mustang said there were signs of prior leaks on the radiator, and it sure was ugly anyhow, so I decided to go for aluminum, and, again, needed both hoses on the passenger side. ALL ALUMINUM RADIATOR - 0340AA wrong one!- Ford Mustang ALL ALUMINUM RADIATOR
(Qty=1, Price=$138.89) I went for a ONE ROW since it was thin and would not create fitting concerns. Correct one ordered was 0259-2AA Ford Mustang All
aluminum Radiator - price in 2011, $137.39 plus shipping, and tax, minus
$15 coupon = $138.68 I cannot believe that I did not post pictures of this, at least not that I can find, so here are a couple. car 689 Car 689 Since the cooling system needed to be cleaned and drained anyhow, I figured all cooling items could be replaced at once. 2 X 10 Stainless radiator overflow was ordered from eBay $29.95 incl postage in 8/2011. Worked fine. Alternator -chrome - found on eBay

Air cleaner spacer and air filter. The plastic
spacer on the Glassic did not suit me, so I ordered a 2 1/2 inch billet
spacer from ? This was ordered Sat. and arrived Tues. by US mail. It seems to fit fine, but is sure shorter that I thought. It is a brushed finish, not chrome look, and quite heavy duty. The ad said only for recessed lip carbs, and I guess that is what I have since it works well. I will get a thicker air filter, cut off the extra long threaded bolt and get a blingy nut for the top. Ebay has all kinds of air cleaner nuts at all price ranges, but I wll get something locally. |

Transmission -- The inspection indicated several
leaks around the transmission, and when I said that I would want the fluid
flushed, bands adjusted, and an inspection - the Classic Mustang guy said
that perhaps a transmission shop would be better equipped for that - he
recommended one nearby. The transmission people checked the car and -- yep, lots of leaks, but also "needed a rebuild". There was metal dust in the transmission pan and I am sure that the pan had not been off in 38 years, so no surprise. The estimate is $1,100 and some dollars. Also, no surprise, if the slipping and leaking stop. |
